"Sun Yat-sen Lotus" returns to Zhongshan after a century

woensdag, 11 april 2018

On Mar 21st, a special homecoming ceremony was held at Zhongshan’s Xiangnongzhou Agricultural Park.

After a century, a root of "Sun Yat-sen Lotus" has been returned to Zhongshan, the hometown of Dr. SunYat-sen, the leading figure in the fight to end the several-millennia long feudal monarchy in China.

"This year is the 40th anniversary of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, as well as the 30th anniversary of the sister relationship between Zhongshan and Moriguchi," said Han Zesheng, president of the Zhongshan Public Diplomacy Association. "We hope that the friendly relationship between China and Japan will be developed through this homecoming ceremony."

100 years ago, in order to thank him for his support in bringing the feudal monarchy to an end, Dr. Sun Yat-sen gave 4 lotus seeds to his Japanese friend.

The plant being brought back is from the lotus grown from one of these four seeds.  The "Sun Yat-sen Lotus" has become a recognised lotus species, and is playing an important role in exchange between China and Japan.

According to Han, people can see the "Sun Yat-sen Lotus" for themself this June at the 8th Zhongshan Lotus Festival, to be held at the Zhongshan Xiangnongzhou Agricultural Park.
